Vegetables are easy to grow and so lovely when you do, not only did you create what you will consume but assuming you treated the plants right they’ll be all natural, healthy and delicious.
As children, we fight with our parents at the dinner table over finishing our portion of healthy vegetables such as peas, broccoli or cabbage. As we grew up, we learned that vegetables hold the key to optimal health. Everyone should try to work on incorporating them into their daily intake. The biggest problem—they wilt and become rotten so quickly.
Why is it a huge deal? Well, it is the trip to the supermarket where you will spend more money to buy the vegetables that went bad in our refrigerators. That extra trip is what most people dread and majorly dislike doing. Amidst all this, what’s the solution to this problem you may inquire?
Well, the answer is too simple to put aside. It may seem like it could be quite a bit of work, but planting your own vegetables is better. There are, however, ten vegetables you can buy once and enjoy for a longer time.
Carrots are a bright orange vegetable, with a nice crunch to it. Its a nice snack that can be regrown from its own top. Wondering if this is true? Well, to see, you must cut the carrot tops and put them in a dish where its in direct sunlight. Suggested places would be: a well-lit room or a window-sill. Carrot greens can also be used in your salads, and even though they are bitter, you can season them up with garlic or use vinegar for a sweet taste.
Here’s something interesting to try. Every bottom of celery we cut, that no one ever likes to consume, can be used to re-grow over again. All you will have to do, is cut the base off then place it in a bowl or saucer in the sun for three days. In that time, the leaves will grow and thicken in the middle of the base. It is said that after three days, you can plant the celery base in soil.
This vegetable is a top ingredient in many people’s salads. Its leaves can actually grow up to twice the size! Used in just about everything, it can also be grown from the bottom stump of a used lettuce head. In a 1/2 inch of water, place the romaine stumps in. After a few days, When there are new leaves and roots, you can then replant the romaine lettuce into your garden or a soiled pot. Interestingly, you can do the same with cabbages as they can be grown again in the same way.
Bok Choy is a type of cabbage that has smooth-edged leaves and benefits from being in a well-lit up area, with the end roots in water. Leave the bok choy in the water for one to two weeks. After that time, replant it in a full pot of soil where it will fully grow a new head. Once the new full head of lettuce has done growing, it is then ready for consumption.
This green vegetable is a member in the family of thistles with a flower bud (artichokes) you can eat. These flowery artichokes can be harvested in the Spring, and have a secondary peak in the Fall season. In order to successfully grow this plant, you must place it in soil that is well-drained and moist. A warm and sunny environment is preferred for this vegetable in order to grow. You also must plant them 24-36 inches apart in rows about 36 inches apart. Before planting the artichoke with 2 inches of compost, change to fresh soil first. Then fertilize the soil monthly with a fertilizer that has a high-nitrogen content. You will be able to harvest the flower buds when the bud hasn’t entirely opened and stalk fully-grown out.
This most popular and favored, skinny vegetable is harvested in early spring. This beauty can keep growing new plants for up to 25 years! However, being a slow-producer, as many yearly vegetables do, Asparagus can provide yummy green snacks annually once established. Planting this vegetable should be done with 2-year old asparagus crown or with seeds. While seeds take up to a couple years to fully develop, crowns from a store can grow at a faster rate. When you choose crowns or seeds, be mindful that this vegetable requires well-drained soil. Any asparagus that is given too much water will rot.
With this veggie, you can regrow it back by utilizing their roots that are usually thrown away when we finish them in our cooking rituals. The scallions need an inch from the root, and a glass of water for starters. It is best to have the glass in a well-lighted room at a mild temperature. After the scallions have reached 4-6 inches, you can start to harvest them and consume them to your enjoyment.
Also known as the “vampire-resistant” vegetable, it also can be reusable as well. From the garlic cloves, sprouts will bloom. Its said that garlic cloves taste much milder than garlic, and can be used in other dishes such as salads and pastas. When it has sprouted, place them into a glass with a little amount of water. This veggie grows best in a window-sill or outside in the sun. After the sprouts are a couple inches long, you will then be able to replant the cloves in a pot filled with soil. The Fall season is when garlic can be harvested, just as the leaves are turning brown.
Fun Fact: Just one clove alone can grow 10+ more garlic cloves for you!
The trimmings of Basil can be utilized to re-grow basil. All you have to do is put the basil clippings that include the stem, into about three to four inches in the water, in the glass. Direct sunlight is best for this green veggie to grow under.When two inches long, you may plant them in pots. In due time, the plants will be at full normal size. It is important that with basil, you must change its water daily or it will have a slimy feel! Besides, no one wants slimy basil on their food!
With Cilantro, you can place it into water in a glass. After the cilantro root has become ripe and grew long enough, plant them in a pot with soil. They will grow best in a room with generous amounts of fresh sunlight. After a few months, your cilantro will be fully-grown and ready to be harvested.
You should give yourself a pat on the shoulder! Your budget will feel less tight and your health will thank you along the way.
