Study: Medium-Chain Triglycerides and Alzheimer’s Disease
In 2004, a research study was conducted with 5 people who have amnestic cognitive impairment and 15 Alzheimer’s patients. The researchers tested the effects of 40 mL of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) after fasting the night before. They had compared a placebo group with the MCT effects.
Results from the study revealed that the consumption of MCT led to improvements in cognitive function after 90 minutes. Patients that consumed MCT had better performance in many recall and memory tests.
A blood test showed that beta-hydroxybutyrate levels had risen 7.7 times. This chemical works to keep the brain protected from harmful toxins and keep neurons in good shape. MCT not only improved cognitive abilities and worked quickly with those who were diagnosed with dementia, it protected the brain from life-threatening toxins. We are in luck as we can get the same benefits of MCT’s through coconut oil.
Can Coconut Oil Help Prevent Dementia?
Coconut oil has MCT’s that have been proven to aid in weight loss, unlike other oils out there. Coconut oil has around 62 percent medium chain triglycerides and its all natural. Even some people go to natural health stores to buy natural MCT oil.
For someone with dementia to get similar results as from the research study, they would have to take 4 tablespoons of coconut oil each day. It may seem hard to reach, but it isn’t as you can cook with it instead of using vegetable or olive oil, to smoothies and even your cup of coffee.
Consuming a small amount of coconut oil while in a healthy state can even see improvements to their cognitive functions and ensure prevention of dementia. It’s advised that if you or someone you know is having signs of dementia, to visit your doctor.
You should always have your condition tested for other causes that lead to memory loss like vitamin deficiencies, sleep disorders, and thyroid disorders that can be treated.
