An Abstinence-Only Education Advocate Was Just Appointed to Health and Human Services – HealthyTipsAdvice

President Trump’s 2018 budget is supposably including a $277 million investment in abstinence-only education.

This however is proven to be highly unsuccessful), and prevents any funding being sent to Planned Parenthood. Quartz reports that the proposed budget will work to “extend abstinence education and personal responsibility education program” between 2018 and 2027.

This investment is lined with VP Mike Pence’s passion for abstinence-only program. This budget does nothing but ignore past research explicitly saying how ineffective the abstinence method is.

A study conducted in 2011 discovered “increasing emphasis on abstinence education is positively correlated with teenage pregnancy and birth rates.”

Three states (Oklahoma, Mississippi and Arkansas) have policies that aim toward abstinence-only sex education.

It was found by The Guttmacher Institute that “no program of any kind has ever shown success in convincing young people to postpone sex from age 17, when they typically first have intercourse, until marriage,” and teens who do commit to abstinence end up performing oral sex, which only increases transmission of STD’s.

The budget proposed by trump will need congressional approval before put into place. Congress is “wary” of the budget proposal.

Axios reports that lawmakers could reject and scrap some of the budget, but will mainly work to keep some of the administrations goals.
