Do not ignore the constant thirst and dry mouth because this can be an indication of some serious illness!
Stress, mental health disorder – When we are stressed, we often experience a feeling like “our mouth went dry.” If you experience stress for a longer period of time, it may lead to mental health disorders, nervousness, anxiety, depression … and may be accompanied by dry mouth.
Medications — One of the most common reasons for having a dry mouth is the inadequate dose of diuretics, medications for theregulation of blood pressure.
Diuretics work by affecting the removal of excess sodium from the body, and in order to be released, the sodium needs water.
When there is less water, the pressure will be lower — explains Dr.Lapcevic. Therefore, it is important to consult with a doctor who can prescribe the precise dose of medication for blood pressure regulation.
Malnutrition — Malnutrition can also be a reason for having a dry mouth, because when the body does not receive enough food and water, all functions will be reduced, including the work of the salivary glands. Then, the whole body suffers from malnutrition.
Sugar (Diabetes) — When a patient complains of dryness of the mouth, the first thing I would check is the level of sugar in the blood. If you also happen to have an increased need for food and water, but thereby losing weight, the symptoms of the disease are clear — explains Dr. Marijana Lapcevic, a general practitioner in the Health Center “Vozdovac”.
Dehydration — Dehydration of the body may occur if the body is exposed to prolonged heat, if the person has vomited or had diarrhea.
As one of the accompanying elements of dehydration we have the feeling of dry mouth because we lost a lot of fluids — explains Dr. Lapcevic.
One of the easiest ways to get hydrated is with solutions that contain substances such as potassium.
Treatment of tumor — In the treatment of malignant tumors, the radiation leads to damage to the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach and the entire intestinal system. Therefore, people suffering from cancer have the feeling of dryness of the mouth during chemotherapy.
