Did you know that there are certain kinds of food that can damage your memory? According to Steth News, there are certain kinds of food that could cause you to have memory loss, especially if you are more at risk of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia.
You should avoid the following:
1. Processed Cheese – Processed cheeses are formulated with whey, emulsifiers, milk, salts, preservatives, and food coloring, as reported by Fooducate. According to Progressive Health, these include American cheese and mozzarella sticks, cheeses that contain nitrosamines – nitrates that are difficult for the body to process.
Over time, high consumption of these types of cheese can cause excessive build-up of unnecessary protein in the body, which leads to the development of plaque in the brain associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
2. Beer – Drinking huge amounts of beer daily can lead to memory loss, as Daily Mail reported that men who drank beer equivalent to two glasses of wine suffered deterioration in their ability to recall information.
Also, the decline of the brain’s “executive function” – which includes attention span and reasoning skills – was found to accelerate by an extra year and a half due to excessive beer drinking.
It is also important to note that most beers today contain nitrites, which increase the risk of a person having Alzheimer’s.
3. Microwavable Popcorn – Popcorn contains diacetyl, a chemical known to produce amyloid plaques. Accumulation of the plaque in the brain leads to Alzheimer’s.
According to Fox News, diacetyl has been associated with respiratory and other health issues in workers at microwavable popcorn and food-flavoring factories.
The ingredient was also known to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, which prevents harmful substances from entering the brain.
4. Processed Meats – Smoked turkey, ham, and bacon are known to contain nitrates that could cause the liver to generate fats that poison the brain and increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
Global Meat News also reported that a study conducted by Harvard University found that women who consume saturated fats had far worse memories than those who ate monounsaturated fats. This leads to the conclusion that processed meat consumption can be linked to Alzheimer’s.
A healthy diet should be followed and the aforementioned foods should be avoided as much as possible. There are alternatives, such as eating cold-water fish (salmon), leafy vegetables, fruits with dark skins like berries, and caffeine-rich foods and beverages like chocolate and coffee.
When frying food, it is recommended to switch to extra virgin olive oil or cold-pressed virgin coconut oil in order to prevent the risk of increased memory loss.
An adequate amount of vitamins and minerals should also be eaten and complex carbohydrates and sugar should be avoided. These only stimulate the production of harmful toxins that can damage not just the body, but the brain as well.
