A new study has revealed that a popular painkiller, falsely advertised as “harmless” by many, could be behind the thousands of deaths from cardiac arrest yearly.
About 326,200 people experienced an SCA outside a hospital a year in just the United States. The causes for SCA remain a mystery to the medical community. So, medical professionals choose to point blame at past heart problems, high levels of LDL cholesterol and family health history.
New Study Reveals Heart-Stopping Side Effects of NSAIDs
The report was in reference to a study named “Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Use Is Associated With Increased Risk of Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Nationwide Case-Time-Control Study”, that was published in a March issue from the European Heart Journal-Cardiovascular Pharmacology. One of the lead researchers, Professor Gunnar H. Gisalson, says that “ Allowing these drugs to be purchased without a prescription, and without any advice or restrictions, sends a message to the public that they must be safe.”
Two NSAIDs were used, diclofenac (22%) and ibuprofen (51%). Results of the study found that the use of NSAIDs was correlated to a 31% increased risk for cardiac arrest. Only diclofenac and ibuprofen were associated with a higher risk by 31-50%. Rofecoxib, naproxen and celecoxib had no link to an increased chance for cardiac arrest.
The findings are a stark reminder that NSAIDs are not harmless. Diclofenac and ibuprofen, both commonly used drugs, were associated with significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest. NSAIDs should be used with caution and for a valid indication. They should probably be avoided in patients with cardiovascular disease or many cardiovascular risk factors.
Ibuprofen Kills Thousands Each Year, So What Is The Alternative?“, following a Reuters article in 2013, that opened with: “Long-term high-dose use of painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac is ‘equally hazardous’ in terms of heart attack risk as use of the drug Vioxx, which was withdrawn due to its potential dangers.
We honestly believe wholeheartedly with Professor Gisalson’s closing statement: “The current message being sent to the public about NSAIDs is wrong. If you can buy these drugs in a convenience store then you probably think ‘they must be safe for me’.
Our study adds to the evidence about the adverse cardiovascular effects of NSAIDs and confirms that they should be taken seriously, and used only after consulting a healthcare professional.”
