Age spots, also referred to as liver spots, are brown or black, tan and flat that form on the skin.
They tend to be in different sizes and are seen mostly on the hands, shoulders, face, and arms. Any skin that gets too much exposure to the sun, can get these. If you are over the age of 50, you can get them and so can young adults.
What Causes Age Spots?
Age spots are from years of excessive exposure to ultraviolet light (UV rays ) from the sun and even using a tanning bed can cause age spots.
In our upper layer of the skin, lies melanin that gives us our skin color. When UV rays penetrate our skin, it speeds up melanin production making us tan. Our skin tans to protect deep layers from being burnt.
Age spots are on areas of skin that had been subjected to an excessive amount of sunlight exposure, due to melanin being produced at a fast rate in extremely high levels.
Age spots are very harmless and anyone can have them. You are more susceptible to them if you have light or fair-colored skin. If you have had many sunburns and stayed outside in strong UV light for long periods of time, then you will be at a higher chance for developing age spots. Always check with a doctor if you see changes in its look, as it could be a sign of melanoma, a form of skin cancer.
Consult with a medical professional if your age spot:
• Is darkly pigmented
• Is rapidly increasing in size
• Has an irregular border
• Has an unusual combination of colors.
• Is accompanied by itching, redness, tenderness or bleeding.
Home Remedy for Age Spots
Age spots are treated with laser therapy, freezing, chemical peels, dermabrasion, bleaching creams and medications. There are natural alternatives that can help to lighten the appearance of age spots. Author of Quantum Paleo, Dr. Doug Willen, passed on some solutions to the pesky age spots.
He advises people use onion juice and apple cider vinegar. Onions are filled with antioxidants that help to weaken free radicals inside the body. Apple cider vinegar has alpha hydroxy acids that help to clear out dead skin and give healthy skin a nice glow.
Here’s how this works:
• Take one fresh onion and dice it.
• Pulverize it using a mortar and pestle.
• Put the liquefied onion into a blender.
• Add in the apple cider vinegar and blend.
• Use a cotton ball to apply the remedy to your age spots.
The video below will educate you about why organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar is a good solution for age spots.
